5’3 grappler here
I struggle to finish guys w RNC from the back both gi and no gi. I usually haveto transition to an armbar to finish, but not having a strong set of back strangles definitely feels like a hole in my game.
As for the Marcelo Garcia technique of trapping an arm, I find it super difficult to get my leg anywhere close to doing so, or my arms too short to push their hand down to the side when I have one of there arms controlled.
Any help or thoughts welcome
Are you able to attempt the choke / RNC? For the longest time I've always felt that the "transition" of taking the back is the best time to actually attack for a RNC because while your opponent is focused on defending the back take they are less focused on defending the choke. After you already established back control, it's actually much harder to finish and RNC.
Thanks Jacon!
I definitely agree the RNC is a lot easier to secure during transition. I’ll keep that in mind in my future rolls and be quicker on the trigger than usual.
I still wish though once I have the back, to have a higher finish rate. Another member suggested transitioning to head & arm choke which is not a bad idea. 2 others suggested moving higher up so their head is more near my belly than being ear to ear.
Will give everyone’s advice a shot.
@iiddyy Another option is to try the "short choke" variation where you go palm to palm. It creates additional pressure and will often provoke the person to life their chin to open the choke up more.
See the video below so you can get an idea of what a short choke is:

I'm only a blue belt, but my black belt professor mentioned something yesterday about back attack that might help you. If you can get your shoulder above their shoulder all your attacks will be much easier.
When you are both upright, scoot backward and then pull them into the space, their back will be to your chest with their shoulder below your shoulder. if this is live rolling you can rock them to the strangling arm and then push their hips lower with the leg that is on top moving their shoulder below yours.
Hopefully this help
Yeah, reaching is all about what height your torso is compared to theirs. You absolutely won't be able to reach if you're below their shoulders, so you can climb up. On the other hand, you can't RNC if their head is down in your lap (but it does make the arm trap easier!) Try adjusting different directions and see what happens!
