    BJJ Belt Promotions

I was just wondering what belt is required from a coach/professor to promote a student. Can a purple belt or brown belt instructor promote a white belt to blue or give stripes to a white or blue belt?

Where I train, there's a purple belt instructor in another place. He has a couple of white belts he wants to give stripes to. He asked the primary instructor, a black belt, how to proceed and the answer was that he is in fact the one who should give those stripes as he is the one training them. The only "condition" was to tell them to do so at the same graduation that happens in the main gym, as we all belong to the same team.

Thanks for the info. Promotions are given under the umbrella of a black belt. I saw a youtube vid where a guy gave himself a promotion lol

It depends on if you want to follow IBJJF rules or not. Thier rules state:

IBJJF approves that purple+ belts can promote one belt below themselves if there is no black belt around

This means that you can only promote once you hit purple. And that promotion can only be up to four stripes of the previous belt to your current belt.

e.g. Purple can promote up to 4 stripe blue, Brown can promote up to four stripe purple

Usually, there is a structure where there is a Black belt in the academy/affiliation where they will oversee all promotions if not carry them out personally themselves.
