    Choosing a beginner routine

Hello, everyone. It’s not yet safe to hit the academy here in Mexico. In the meantime I’m trying to build a strength base with some novice lifting.

I’m still working on my form and technique but have been debating myself on doing Starting Strength v.s. doing Stronglifts 5x5. It’s mostly the same exercises (squat, deadlift, bench press and overhead press) but one also includes the power clean and the other includes the barbell row.

Which do you think would be most beneficial to my strength grappling-wise?

The best program I’ve come accros is Tactical Barbell. Disregard the name, the content is awesome. Get both the strength book and the conditioning book from Kindle for like 12 USD total. Read the books cover to cover and you can make your own programs for the rest of your life. Start with Base Building and go from there.

For me personally, I've tried both stronglifts and starting strength, but the programme I gained most from, in terms of applicable strength, was simple and sinister (admittedly not a barbell programme and does have some associated cheese). That said, tactical barbell looks like a good programme, so I may have a go at that.

Bizarre hipster vibes aside, for mobility and strength, I've gained a lot from Animal Flow, and I still consistently warm up for strength sessions with this.

These are just what worked for me, mind, so may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Hey, fellas. Some really good stuff here - SS, Stronglifts, Tactical Barbell and Simple and Sinister. I think all of it works if you stick with it and train hard. I’ve found Average 2 Savage 2.0 from Greg Nuckols to be the most fun, most effective, and most customizable program I’ve ever done. Check it out if you’re so inclined. Crazy amount of goodness for $10

I would like to hijack this thread: What if I do not have any equipment at home? What kind of body weight exercise routine will you recommend?

Asking this because my gym will be closed for 3 weeks due to the COVID situation here. So there wouldn't be any BJJ classes nor any strength and conditioning classes for the time being.

If you're new to lifting, stronglifts 5x5 is great. I think it's really 5x5x5 because it is only 5 exercises to learn? Been a while.
Go with that one, learn your techniques perfectly.
After you get the hang of doing it heavy and proper, then add in depth to the movements. Do some or all of your squats ass to ankle, for example, make those knees stronger. Substitute heavy barbell for dumbbells and go for maximum depth and stretch. BJJ athletes need to be strongest at the weakest point. Not to be untappable, but to be safe when we are getting tapped. That bit of extra strength from weights makes a huge difference in not being injured. Maximum ROM, range of motion, with all your lifts.
As an instructor, I love teaching weightlifters and powerlifters bjj because strength athletes understand the importance of grip, technique, foot placement, all those tiny details.

I'm gonna start Tactical barbell Base building and after I'll switch to fighter+black template. Sounds good to me.

I’m 48 and I follow simple and sinister since one year now.
Goo d programm in my opinion. Easy to make at home, need only one kettlebell at time. Take not too much time to do. Easy on back and joints, what for me is essential.

Before covod and pandemie, I tried barbell training. But it was not that easy for me to recover, even from a little session. Perhaps am I stipid and push the limuts without knowing it? Fact is that for me, BJJ was affected by my lifting programm. I rhink that with simple and sinister, everything will be allright.

There is only one novice effect you will ever get so don't waste it on anything that will tax your recoveryy for little to no benefit. Do SS, get as strong as possible in the basic barbell lifts, then focus on the ancillary stuff.

I don't really have any advice, but good luck with whatever program you choose. Let us know how it goes!

Interested in bodyweight training program. Any good follow along video for this?

My wife and I have been doing stronglifts since Covid began. While everyone around us seemed to gain weight and get squishy, we are in better shape than we've been in years. I the strength improvements have absolutely helped me in BJJ. I'd recommend adding pullups to the SL program as well. The combination will really improve grip strength.

Starting Strenght 5x5 by Mark ripatoe. Cannot go unsaid. However, his OHP video confuses me about hip engagement.
