Hi all,
I am looking to try and systemise small sections of my game into closed systems. I know in more neutral/open areas of BJJ it is impossible to systemise them because there are far too many possibilities that could happen whereas, say if you funnel your opponent into a certain area such as you have taken the back or you have mount, you close down their options and could somewhat systemise what you do.
What I am looking for is some ideas of CLOSED systems as in ones where you don't leave your system during it. Say a mount system where you try an armbar and lose mounted position you are out of your mounted system then and are usually on the bottom if the armbar fails. The kimura trap is an example of what I am looking for in that once you have the kimura trap if you keep the grip you can work within that system.
Mount and back control are my two favourite positions so they would be particularly appreciated haha.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
As you've stated yourself, the very transitional nature of positions and submissions in BJJ makes exclusively playing a closed system almost impossible, unless you have many smaller closed systems which you can switch to and interlink. But in saying that I've been going down a very conceptual rabbit hole recently and it's in this that you will be able to work with a very closed system. The closed elbow concept, for instance, translates to every single positon in BJJ in terms of defense, but you can also use it in terms of attacking e.g. if my opponent doesn't have a closed elbow (or Trex arms) then I can omoplata them from everywhere.
There's also positions like you've mentioned with the kimura trap, one really helpful concept/system like this on grapplers guide is the magic grip series because it translates to so many positions and submissions....

I think one challenge is to enter your closed system. If you plan a system, it would be nice to use it and to use it, you need to get to a position where your system starts. Often opponent has other ideas.
