Escape headlock from Dog fight position?

    Hi all

Recently I was rolling with a complete beginner. When I went from "half guard" to "dog fight" they got me in a headlock (the kind a high school bully would do).

I realised I don't know how to escape this properly without fatiguing their bicep and pulling my head out.

Any advice on how to do this without ripping my head and ears off?

It's not a comfortable position, it can definitely cause cauliflower ear if you're not careful.

In a nutshell, you need to get to side control top on them, perhaps by rolling underneath them with a standard roll-under sweep from half guard. Then you will be in side control top. Even if they maintain their headlock from the bottom of side control, it's pretty easy to escape or wait for them to get tired. You can use your forearm on their face to make them face the ground, step over to put your thigh on their head (or even your shin on their head, especially if they are bigger than you), and basically get to the armbar position.

Think of the headlock as your opponent over committing to your head and forgetting about base. This can be a good thing for you. When you roll under him he will either have to base or he will get swept.

    Look up plan B sweeps.
