Hey guys I have a guard retention question specifically regarding torreando passes/staple passes. Whenever I try to prevent my partners from getting on top of me, instead of them being directly in front of me I always end up in turtle and them taking my back. I think I'm using the retention movement that Jason showed in one of the videos where you end up flat on your stomach instead of them in side control, which is why I end up in turtle; but is there anything else I can do to just have them back in the "headlights" zone?
Besides following them with your legs you can try self framing. This means you hold the outside of your knees/thighs with your hands. This will limit the amount they can throw you legs around. Of course if you stay like this forever you can't move either, but it is a nice opening defense against people that love to torreando passes. You can also try spreading your legs out wider as it makes them travel farther to get around your guard, but of course this is dependent of flexibility. Be careful not to reach with your legs as well. I hope that helps.
