    Half guard struggles

    Hi Guys

I’ve spent 3-4 months developing my half guard bottom and have made good progress.

However one problem is when the guy on top tucks his leg in and sits on his glute and tucks that leg in makes it very difficult to attack that leg especially when your going for the deep half guard. If they also have tight underhook defence it negates quite a few attacks. Any ideas- videos would be preferred to how to overcome this please ?

They're trapping their own leg; no need to attack it, use the opportunity to sweep. I've started experimenting with a much less traingley half guard. Normally you'd triangle your legs to the outside, or the inside of their trapped leg, or even use the lockdown. I've found every configuration that locks them in to be detrimental to hip mobility for myself.

So recently I've started to point both my knees to the ceiling and just kept the pinch inwards with my thighs to keep the half guard position. With your knees pointing straight up it's very easy to swing your hips to either side (in your scenario it'd be the side that have trapped themselves by tucking the leg and sitting on the glute). They now have two options: 1) Get swept 2) Post out with a leg or arm to stop the sweep which opens the space for you to dig for the underhook or switch to deep half etc.
