Hand and Wrist health for Gi…

    Q & A

Do you guys have a favored gripping method or approach when in the Gi? One that’s more forgiving to your finger joints and wrist? Over the years they get destroyed. I don’t feel that the trade off for good jiu-jitsu should be that you’re no longer able to put in time on your PlayStation lol.

I focus moreso on not "death gripping", I also turn my wrists in more which provides more leverage to support my grips.

And a big one is that I use "elbow" connection with my body to help support my grips as well depending on the scenario. By being able to drop my elbow and connect it to something, it helps my grips a lot.

@Jason_Scully I like that… I feel like I use those elbow frames subconsciously but I’m gonna try to consciously be more active with it. Thanks man

I try to use a hybrid game, where I use similar guards and grips in NO-Gi as in the Gi. The only big exceptions are Lasso-guard, belt and Lapel-gripping.

And if someone rips too hard I do not hold on for dear life - they mostly overexert from that motion anyway, which will then create an opening for me.

@MRitorno Definitely agree with this. I do a lot of no-gi style grips mixed in with my gi grips. It not only keeps my grips from failing, it also diversifies my game as well!

If you want to give your fingers a rest you can experiment with the judo traditional sleeve grip and the pistol grip. You can also try no-gi grips in the Gi; it's very fun, and it teaches you not to depend on dear life for a grip; instead, work your way to a better position or submission.

You guys covered most of it. Only other thing I started doing was grabbing cloth behind the lapel/collar. I used to just grip the lapel itself and when people would break my grips it would shred my fingers. If I can’t get my grips in deep, I’ll just use No Gi grips.
