    Learning by problem solving/brainstorming

    Training
    by crossover5/11/2021(edited)

I'll try to record how does this idea play out. Idea is to use goals and opponents actions as problems or challenges to solve - and that will be training. I don't solve the problems - I might introduce a concept to guide problem solving, but every one has their own way of thinking.

I did write that first situation for a challenge or a task is getting a grip or a tie up - dominant from your training partner.

I am in a lock down for few weeks still so I can't test my ideas, but soon...

I often teach this way, well kind of... When I am rolling with students, I will give them problems to solve, not verbally, just place them in a position the poses a certain puzzle. If they fail to solve it, I will work my way back to the same position so they can try again. I will usually give them no verbal coaching on the puzzle, unless that ask about it after the roll. Feedback from my students on this teaching method has been overwhelmingly positive.

First situation: Roll starts standing and you are not giving a dominant grip or tie up or pulling guard. Your goal is to get a "control" that gives you time to move your opponents balance or move your self to a position to control/dominate a situation. (How long will you have a dominate control? )

So you need a relatively workable stance and some tactics to catch a "handle". Often a hand/wrist is closes and opponent even offers it ( push you away or making their own grip).

Is it even possible to cover all possibilities for catching opponents hand, wrist sleave? You can force your opponent to control distance with their hand. What would you need to do to catch it - maybe end up with 2 on 1 for better control?

Would this be a "problem" or a goal that can be discussed? (I'd like to be at a gym and test all possible reaction when you are closing up and faking attacks - is opponents hand really catchable?

I'd suggest that progressive resistance would help in this regard. Start complaint and test for false positives by increasing the degree of resistance by degrees. Without this it would be an all or nothing type thing and learning would be difficult

Progressive resistance is a good tool. With brainstorming at first there might be a different challenge. Goal is to catch a person in an unfavorable situation: make other move or get time for your self to move so that you have a dominant edge.

Progressive resistance will be a method to test your solutions, but first you need a setup or a routine. You need to read your training partner. I don’t know if anyone can keep there reactions neutral, when they know after few tries, what is coming...

Maybe system just has to be so that if your training partner does not react, he is fucked. And you are assuming a reaction which is the trigger for your move.

Problem solving needs actual rolling and the value is in training partners reactions which should be as realistic as possible.

Maybe we could also discuss various methods of progressive resistance? SBG has 5 different drilling formats.
Rob Biernacki has one name for his approach FYJJ. Both are in a way similar - Kind of positional sparring with a re setup rules and goals. I see the system so that idea is to make rules so that sparring will serve the goal of learning. You make the drill so that its playful and it drills the essence of the lesson.

Some times its also called gamification, but gamification is not playing learning games. Here we make up a ”game” and play it for just because its fun and motivating.

One step to start using Brainstorming as a learning method could be to do a poster and hang it at the gym.

    Poster (content of it)

    a) What happened?
    b) When did it go wrong? (Early prevention or refining your control/attack)
    c) Analysis Phase
    - Your body/ their body?
    - Where can you move?
    - What happens with small pressure?
    - Preliminary conclutions (rapit prototyping)
    d) Progressive resistance - constrained positional sparring (FYJJ)

Most likely the poster will be just few words reminding of steps - and in Finnish.

Here is a game to which I’ll test problem solving as a teaching/learning method.

    Hi mate

By the looks of it i think you would really benefit/enjoy learning about Ecological dynamics and the constraints led approach to learning/skill acquisition. Check out instagram accounts like @standardjiujitsu @mma_skillsoverdrills @ronin_fitness_
You will no longer waste time with dead pattern drilling and start to learn some great ways to learn sport effectively/efficiently. Have fun!

I don’t think that there is any dead drilling in brainstorming?
