I wrote an article breaking down "Leg Pin Passing" which has recently been popularized by the Ruotolo brothers. I tried to show how this new style of passing is being using by top competitors and I also link to some learning resources. I hope you find this interesting.

I play around with leg pinning every once in a while. At the very minimum it's very annoying to the person you are rolling with and many times makes their reaction predictable at times.

The predictable reaction opens up a lot of moves that normally aren't there. I believe this is how Kade Ruotolo caught Ethan Creslensen in that tight armbar. Ethan sat up to remove Kade's leg and Kade was waiting for him.

I noticed this a few years back playing with the concept of stapling (https://grapplersguide.com/second-portal/lms/lessons/stapling-staple-concept.25622/ ) when I moved from the kneeling staple to the standing pass position. Took me a while to figure out that stepping on the thigh 2 inches above the knee was optimal for me--since my partners could not simply kick out of my hand grip and sit up to attempt a leg take-down. Instead they almost always kicked their leg out and then moved it into the leg drag position (trying to stop the pass) but it would allow me to pass in the opposite direction with the handy leg drag position they just gave me.
