    Light female grappling style

    Training

    Hello,

Myself and my girlfriend have been training for 3 years or so and she is approx 5"3 and weighs approx 52kg. Because of this she really struggles to actually get to train with people that are even close to her size and it seems to be getting to her. She absolutley loves BJJ but I have really noticed that the past 8-12 months after pretty much every session she just seems very defeated mentally and often says "I'm so crap" or "I wish i wasnt so small" sort of thing. I am worried that she is getting to the point that the enjoyment is really being taken away as she is rarely managing to get any success when rolling, seemingly due to being much smaller, unless the opponent then goes too easy and then it is a bit of a strange roll where her opponents just lie there doing nothing sort of thing.
So with that said, what sort of advice would you give her? And importantly, what style of game should she be focusing on? She is very good at triangles and seems to fire them off from absolutley everywhere, but does actually favour top game, especially mount and working for triangles from there.
Any advice and perhaps recommendations for courses on here that would help her would be much appreicated! Note: she trains both gi and no gi.

    Thanks so much in advance!

EDIT: just another note- I train at a different club to my girlfriend and her instructor is 6"4 and 125kg ish so is a BIG guy and really doesnt seem to be able to help her with techniques for her size unfortunately.

First I would ask what her and your goals are. If the goal is self defense then she is where she should be because she will no doubt have to defend against a larger attacker. If its fun/sport JJ then a really smart things to do is make friends with other women and smaller guys there or elsewhere and start some after class grappling. I have a group I roll with at a friends house on Sundays because we enjoy it and we can learn some things not taught regularly in our classes.

My school is self defense focused and my teacher is also a large guy. He constantly tells the women to learn to roll with the bigger guys because thats where the threat is. He also encourges them to roll with their hair down because thats how it'll be outside in a parking lot when they get attacked. This has its pluses and minuses because they often get beat down regularly and hit a wall and then quit. My guess is they quit more than men do for this reason. It can be energizing for them to spend more time with other women just so they can experience the wins from time to time.

Wish I could be more helpful than this. I would just start from scratch and figure out what the end goal is because when you know that you have some trajectory on what to do next.

I think the coach counts for a lot so if it's not a good match for her perhaps she should look to someone who complements her style. Regarding a style for someone with her stature, stay slick and keep moving - stay flexible, compact, and experiment with inverting.

Honestly I'd think about getting a drill dummy and if she can hit drill after drill she will program the technique into her body-it will be automatic and fast - hard to beat. Especially in no gi - I think the grips on the gi favor the bigger stronger players.

Easy solution would be to find some training partners who are closer to her size - girls or teens?
Second option would be to design own goals for each training session. Something that she might be able to do? Like don’t let training partner smash you. Keep scooting or scrimping and framing as long as possiple.... Count how many times you can redirect opponents pressure...maybe small steps will motivate. Small wins that others don’t have to know about.

The girls in my gym wants to always roll with teens because they are of the same size. I'll echo the recommendation that rolling partners should vary in terms of size and level to make it fun, fulfilling and humbling experience. You don't entirely learn if you are being being defensive and ragdolled all the time. you need someone smaller or level lower you so you can practice pulling off some techniques.

As a larger guy, I can tell you the players that give me the most problems are the smaller ones. (a) especially who know how to frames with the legs and arms such that I cannot close the space (technically) and (b) those who do drop seoi nage fast (complete PITA- and the mat comes too fast.)

The players who frame with their feet hardly use close guard, rather they work open guard and have fast legs such that their feet are always on your hips no matter how many times you've cleared them to pass. She might want to consider a strategy of frustrating her opponents by keeping them at a distance. That strategy also plays to her triangle attack.

Look at this open guard work that you can find here in GG....See how Martin Aedma no matter what position he is in, he is driving his feet to tori's hips. Extremely frustrating.....

There are a couple pieces of good advice above so I won't rehash them. Just let me add that constantly training with people bigger, stronger, and/or better that you can be great for your game but hard on the psyche. It is very hard to see your own progress in that kind of atmosphere. One thing that could help is searching out an open mat where other women regularly roll. Then she would have the opportunity for more competitive rolls once a week or so. Just a thought...

If heel hooks are allowed at her gym I would recommend getting good at leg entanglements and heel hooks. There are different opinions of when someone should learn leglocks but from my point of view after 3 years of training I don’t see any reason to wait any longer. The inverted heel hook in particular has probably the highest leverage of any submission I’m aware of.

Hi all, thanks for all the ideas!
Loads to go at here. I will pass on the advice to her and we will see if we can come up with a bit of a game plan :D
    Thanks again!

She should look up Emily Kwok. She has some instructional stuff here on GG and elsewhere.
