How to Overhead Press With Mark Rippetoe | The Art of Manliness - YouTube

I do not understand the aspect of moving the hips. I feel unbalanced when I do this, and that I am not moving much force in the upwards direction with a hip hinge that is so mild. Any suggestions?

Why do you even flick the hip forward? Seems injury prone to do this.

My nonexpertise mind thought the proper way is to move your hips lower to upwards to have some kind of force or jerk. Forgot the proper term for that.

I don't really do this exercise regularly, but it seems that he is using the hip thrust to help start the motion of the bar. I can see how it could make you feel unbalanced though. Still, I tend to think Mark Rippetoe knows what he is talking about.

As already said the little wiggle is just Ripp's version of a push press. I don't have a problem with it. The Press 2.0 though is just a standing incline IMO. I love the way SS breaks down the instruction of the basic barbell lifts.

If you're having issues feeling balanced with this movement, I think you should just default back to the stricter variant of the Overhead Press where you keep your hips static by squeezing the glutes and pressing the barbell overhead with just your shoulders muscles and arms (traps, front deltoid, etc.). I personally don't feel like you'll be missing out on any training effect by not doing the layback.

One of my favorite lifts! I’m just getting my butt back into gear after ZERO activity in 2020. Getting back to basics!

You can find other videos on YouTube teaching the OHP as well. I like to watch different versions just in case he explains something a little different or maybe throws in additional information/perspective that may have been left out in another video.

Yep, they're just different variation OHP that either: (1) After 1st rep, rest & breath at top, bounce for reps, or (2) start & breath at bottom.

& particularly Rippetoe's 2.0 version is to help boost from bottom with consistent hip trust (because we're "weaker" at bottom). When weight is going up, it just helps consistency when you've accumulated enough fatigue.

Answering OP: the mild upward motion is correct since it's just to help the burst from starting at shoulder level. The design is not to "cheat" like push-press, but use it to remove/reduce the "limitation" of starting at shoulder level. It will make more sense when weight is getting heavy enough.

By all means, use any variation you like.
