Training for competition in a gym without many competitors

I've been at the same organization for the last 3-4 years and I'm really happy with it. There's 5 locations near me and I train frequently (usually every Monday-Thursday night with an open mat and MMA practice on Saturday morning). About a year ago, the main location where I train got a new coach and he was heavily focused on competition. After he showed up, I started competing as well and we spent a lot of time outside of normal classes drilling. He's since moved away and we don't have any coaches who seem to be focused on comps. I have greatly enjoyed competing and would like to continue.

There are great resources in the gym such as several black belts, one coach that refs comps with some frequency, some folks who have done IBJJF, etc. There are also a handful of people who compete sporadically. However there isn't a lot of directly competition focused work. One of the coaches had said he'd be willing to teach a regular comp class if we had a set number of people that would attend. His number is reasonable but it seems difficult to assemble given everybody's level of interest and busy schedules. Another issue is my access to some of these people. I live a fair distance from them and may only see them on the occasional Saturday. Where that leaves me is my normal classes and resources like this.

With all of that said, what can I do to get myself ready for competitions given the environment? I can probably leverage the open mat for the occasional hard roll or maybe play points and I can ask people to start with me in a bad position. Beyond that, I'm not sure about developing my "game" (however much of one a 40 year old blue belt can have) nor what to do without a corner.

    Thanks!

Find a training partner or two with similar interests and use the open mat time to your advantage
Replicate the drilling and situational sparring that your former coach put you through

If you have his contact reach out to him and perhaps he can offering tips and suggestions for you and your training partner to use to prepare at the open mats

Perhaps others will see your training and try it
When you get a large enough number then perhaps the school will start a formal
    Comp class.

    Good luck :)
