At the moment I am using Jason’s modern guard retention as background for a passing game and Gules Lachlans sweep prevention for a sweeping game. Kind of giving me some ideas on what should, could or might happen during a short situational sparring. Just wondered if anyone uses instructionals that way and what could be a good source.
I think you can take any instructional and turn it into ecological style games as long as you try to extract the main goal and the concepts to achieve that goal. The nature of an instructional is a very specific move or set of techniques that should be done a certain way. But if you break that down into invariable things that should never change (those are your constraints for your situational sparring) and things that can be riffed upon and changed slightly but the concept behind the technique still works (those are the things you're looking to emerge but not necessarily point out or show). That way pretty much any piece of instructional content can serve as prompts and designs for situational sparring games.
