The grapplers guide has so much high quality content available, how do you narrow down what to look at next?
I'm curious as to how more experienced grapplers choose where to go to next in their own study and development
I’m not an experienced grappler but I tend to leave the gym having something in mind that I noticed that I needed in my game. Last week I kept finding myself stuck in side control so I went home and studied on how to escape side control. I think that it’s fun to explore techniques that I WANT to learn, but it’s more satisfying to learn the techniques that I NEED to learn, because it’s more beneficial to my current gym time. It’s cool to check out different submissions but for me in my journey, I need to focus more on escapes and sweeps.
Exactly, it's about need over want. I prioritize things that I feel are glaring holes in my game, as long as it's not too niche, i.e. I want to work on situations that come up often enough.
Now that I feel my game is getting more rounded, I'm starting to add things that are not must-haves, but that I feel are going to click with my existing game. I want to know how to get there and what it does for me.
For instance, I've been doing reactive entries to the matrix backtake in some guard retention situations for a while, and now I want to learn K Guard / Keymaster in much further depth as a position that I'll seek proactively. And the reason I want to do that is to have a better answer against opponents good at stuffing my open guard into headquarters leading me to play half guard or RDLR very defensively. Also I want to up my leglock game and that's going to give me entries for that purpose.
In summary it's about learning high percentage techniques based on sound principles that fit into your broader game vs. chasing the latest low percentage 18-step sequence on instagram.
I mostly use Grapplers Guide for things that I felt the instructors here could teach me better than my in-person instruction would. For example I feel the judo, sambo, and wrestling experts here could teach me more about takedowns and takedown defense than my BJJ coach could. Additionally I will go over areas that I notice are weaknesses in my game that are worth my time to study and improve.
At this point, I use Grapplers Guide in several ways
My goal is to watch all vids on site, starting with the fundamentals and going from there. This takes a lot of discipline
to watch everyday, assignment completion is a good way of getting going.
