If someone walked in today with no experience, most coaches would start with stance and balance before anything else, because every bad habit later traces back to poor footing.
If you had one session with a complete beginner, what is the single thing you would drill and nothing else?
Will teach them proper stance and jab cross most of begginers get injured lik tennis elbow coz of wrong form should teach proper moment and punching mechanism
I’d probably focus on learning how to punch without sacrificing balance or position. Beginners often focus so much on hitting the target that they lean, overreach, square up, or let their hands drop afterward.
I’d have them throw a basic jab while staying balanced enough to immediately move, defend, or throw again. If they can learn early that every strike has to leave them in a good position afterward, I think a lot of other skills become easier to build later.
I’d probably drill stance and movement more than anything (as you highlighted in your question).
Not just “stand like this”, but being able to step forward, back and sideways without crossing your feet, standing up too tall or ending up completely square. Practically it would be to have them mirror you around the mat while staying in stance. Forward, back, left, right, occasional direction changes, then start adding a jab while they move. Nothing fancy, just make keeping their base automatic, all whilst staying at the desired range with solid connection to the ground to be ready to move anywhere immediately at any time.
I’d try to find out why he wants to be a striker and what he think training will do for him.
Not sure yet, its been a while since I last logged in. Glad you are still here!
